Activity sessions for only £1 during Half Term

The sessions will take place in Coniston and are available for only £1 per person to anyone who would like to take part.

The sessions will be delivered by trainee instructors who have been following our intensive outdoor instructor course, preparing them for working as outdoor instructors. Sessions will also be supervised by experienced instructors.

We have Canoeing and Kayaking activity sessions and Guided Walks available for £1 per person from Monday 13th February 2012 and throughout the week. All we ask is that sessions must be booked onto in advance and that anyone under 18 is accompanied by an adult. Ring or book online here.

An ‘Outdoor World’ experience from a (normally) indoor person’s point of view - the office job with perks!

Having worked in the office of River Deep Mountain High for almost 3 years, I have taken part in the odd ‘extreme’ evening out-of-work activity with the instructors. The “Muddy Boot Challenge” on Friday 9th December, held at Thurston Outdoor Education Centre this year, however was the most extreme and difficult yet! When I say difficult, this is from the viewpoint of an active and fairly fit 24 year-old woman, as opposed to every other individual taking part in the challenge, that completes a Mountain Walk, Kayak journey or Mountain Bike Ride as a daily activity.

To grasp what the ‘Muddy Boot Challenge’ consisted of, you must think back to when you did Cross Country around your old school field. Ok, now increase the incline on the route, make the field so muddy that it feels like your running on a beach because your feet sink and slide back whilst your trying to run forward. To top it off, add Canoeing around Coniston Water with high winds and heavy rain, and THEN Mountain Biking with the steep inclines and declines that the Lake District are famous for, on to your already throbbing muscles! Feeling tired yet?

The ‘Muddy Boot Challenge” required teams to complete mental tasks throughout the route too, such as memorising tasks and quizzes, whilst also keeping the Gingerbread Man given to them at the beginning of the challenge alive and complete (River Deep’s team gingerbread man was named Ron!).

Team Leader and Owner of River Deep Mountain High, Johan said that we “Came last but it felt like first, loved it more than the 2 wins” (in previous years) “it was my Team, and this made me feel very proud of them and where River Deep has got too.”

River Deep Mountain High is a family run company which has run outdoor activities for families and groups for 8 years now.

I fell off my Mountain Bike (over the handlebars!) due to the combination of too much rain and hail, not enough daylight, pure tiredness and lack of experience – I have been off-road Mountain Biking once in my life and that was in March this year, so Mountain biking on a dark Winter night at 5pm in December with head torches, may not have been the best idea.

By completing this challenge, not only did I learn a lot about my own capabilities and limits, it also brought out the natural characteristics of our instructors, as they motivated and cared for me throughout, making me feel really safe and therefore enabling me to achieve something I never would have done on my own. They really are the best out there, and that’s why River Deep Mountain High are so successful as outdoor activity providers, getting complete beginners out of their comfort zone, enjoying activities they wouldn’t normally take part in.

Lanehead Outdoor Education Centre were the winners of this years challenge, which was the best result, as this centre is closing down in the very near future, due to lack of funding. This is a very upsetting time for the staff at Lanehead, as it is the end of an era for everyone that has worked alongside and for them. We wish them all the very best in their upcoming adventures.

Manchester Climbing Wall

Following some fun and games at the Manchester Markets with plenty of great food, we headed to Manchester Climbing wall which is in an old Church.

We all enjoyed a good mix of different grade and height lead climbs.

Followed by trying to retrieve the rubber duck from the top of the walls wherever Johan put it.

The Walls were very impressive and had a lot of variety that suited each persons differing needs.

Everyone managed to climb 5 to 10 Lead Climbs, and a lot of fun was had.

End of Term Climbing Trip

It's the end of term, and the students are breaking up for the holidays so we have gone to explore some large climbing walls at the Blackpool towers and Manchester climbing wall. Both offer something very different to our local crags and local climbing walls. On arriving at Blackpool you are struck by its monsterous size.

Then when climbing you quickly feel very exposed overlooking Blackpool with cars honking there horns at you and the local kids watching. This was quite an experience for all of us.

We all managed to get some good lead climbs done however,

and then enjoyed the sunset,

and some floodlit climbing!

We went on an epic adventure where the students didn't know where they were going, just that it was for 3 days and they didn't need a tent! The walk started from Lowick Old School - Our River Deep base and we went all the way to Scafell over the 3 days around 35 miles. Dinner was eaten on the hillside cooking whilst watching the sun set on both eveninngs and the first night was the biggest shocker we slept in a....

Outdoor Instructor Training Course 2011-2012 - Paddlesport 2 and 3 star training

The course so far has had some wonderful paddling days. With some amazing weather this Autumn, following the rain and winds that shrugged the leaves off the trees and filled the lakes and rivers up we have been enjoying a very mild and pleasant late October and Autumn so far.

Paddling on Coniston Water in both Open Canoes and Kayaks, the Students this year have now gained their BCU 2 star qualification, and can look forward to some river paddling.

The first day on a river, a bit splashy judging by the expression, everyone fell in at some point too.

It was nice to be back on the Lake and the right way up.

A crazy windy day, and our highly qualified Sailing instructor could take our group out for an exciting and full on Sailing session. Winds were forecast at 40 miles per hour on Coniston Water on this day!! Epic adventures!

I was going to do this even without your request, the Gorge walk with Dave was AMAZING.

Apart fromm the natural beauty and challenge of the walk etc. our guide was incredible. He made myself and my family feel totally welcome and special and safe, he gave us all the interesting info on the gorge and was amazingly helpful in every aspect.

The whole experience was without doubt the best thing our family have ever done together, let alone on this holiday!!

We have not stopped talking about it. It was value for money, exciting, challenging, interesting it bonded our family even closer and we feel like we made a friend with our guide. He may well do scores of these walks every season but he made us feel so special with his enthusiasm and knowledge. We cant wait to come back soon and do the Rydal Gorge with him.

Activity Experience (Pitch, Kit, Content)

5 / 5 Excellent. This is the first time we have used RDMH, in fact the first activity impressed my grandson so much that we booked the other three activities.

The locations for the activities we well chosen and the instructions to the locations comprehensive (except for the comment above).

The use of the Hawk 20 for the sailing was really good as everyone had an opportunity to participate (Johan was an excellent).

For the climbing, Dave got really stuck in and gave everyone the opportunity for three climbs in the morning which kept everyone busy.

The instructors instilled confidence in the participants and encouraged them.

Will requires a special mention as my grandson, Austin, had previously had a poor abseiling experience with another company causing him to fall. Will encouraged him and he willingly took the 45M abseil in Cathedral Quarry. The walk in and out of the quarry was really interesting and made the morning even more interesting.

I think it is good to get the participants to travel the activity locations themselves rather than being bundled into a Land Rover. It also give more on-site time.

Overall Value for Money

5 / 5 Bearing in mind the quality of the equipment (Petzl harnesses and helmets rather than cheaper less comfortable ones), the excellence of the instructors, the superb hot chocolate and the high quality service RDMH provide excellent value for money.

And finally, any other comments

Although I understand your T&C's regarding the need to have an adult with under 18's, at 67 years of age I could not contemplate taking part in activities like kayaking, and gorge scrambling and I think it would be impossible to attend as a "nominated adult". This unfortunately limits the activities in which my grandson can participate to those that we can do together (sailing) or where I can attend for a "helmet" charge.

However, we will definitely be back for more next year!

Sailing on Sunny Coniston

It's not bad when your third day back to work after maternity leave consists of an afternoon Sailing on Coniston Water!

Johan and I met up with Linda and Chris and no sooner than our buoyancy aids were on, we were into the Hawk and heading off across the lake with a pretty strong wind helping us on our way.

Although Linda, Chris and myself were all beginners, Johan quickly put us at ease and it was not long before we were in control of the the boat ourselves. I think its safe to say we all enjoyed the thrill of tacking back and forth up the lake and leaning off the side of a speeding boat with the sun on our faces.

Sailing down the middle of the lake surrounded by the gorgeous Coniston fells was fantastic and for Linda we hope it was a birthday experience to remember!

Johan had a great day with Love Productions on Saturday helping with the filming of a programme to be shown in July regarding where weather comes from.

We had a fantastic day with the weather giving a good demonstration of clouds forming as water vapour from the irish sea hit the mountains, with the awesome view courtesy of Great Burney.

Chris Hollins did a great job of presenting showing me (Johan) why he is a presenter, and it even rained in Seathwaite though of course it often does.

On Sunday the water was really high in the Esk Gorge in Eskdale - our most extreme Gorge Walk with brilliant jumps and a true White Water experience! Look at all that white water! It is incredibly powerful but with our fully qualified instructors, we make it the most fun experience ever! Well deserved free hot chocolate during this day!!

I though I would just write to show my gratitude to my groups over the past few weeks. Within a seven day period i have had two people on seperate activities one gorge walking and one climbing. One in their late 30s and one in their 20's say either "this has been the best thing they had ever done day in their life" or "this was the best thing I have ever done" respectively.

I am writing this to say thankyou, this has given me massive job satisfaction since there is no better thing than to be providing people with the best experiences of their life, this is what I aim for, so to occasionlly reach such dizzy heights has been very rewarding.

I have really enjoyed these sessions too, there is no greater job satisfaction.

Visit to Eskdale

Been over to Eskdale this morning to visit the camping and caravan club campsite there. What a great campsite! Lovely setting, great facilities, pub right next door and a fab camping barn to boot! They were the first in the country to have camping pods (insulated wooden tents) and they're set up as a lovely little village inbetween some trees.

We can do climbing activities, guided walks, biking and of course our full-day gorge walk up the Esk from there. Watch out for some great packages for camping and activities there soon!

Out with the journalists

Got out on the lake for the first time this year with a group of journalists. We took them open canoeing and the weather looked like it was on our side with sunshine and a flat calm lake. It was lovely having that feeling of gearing up for a new season and sharing with people what you do. The daffodills are out, the bluebird cafe has opened its fab new building and spring is shouting its call to get outdoors!

The wind decided to come on a bit stronger than forecast as the morning progressed but we still reached Fir Island and then let the wind take us back up the lake. A few waves were no bother as our boats are just brilliant in that situation.

Early season Gorge Walks - March

Fun was had by all we kept moving to keep warm and we all felt warm in the full body wetsuits with cags, only hand and feet were cold (feet numb!).

The river has changed a bit over the winter making it different for the coming year.

Hawk 20

We are really excited to be working in the sun on our new (to us) Hawk 20 we have bought as a boat share with The University of Birmingham Raymond Priestley Centre where it will sat on its mooring. This enables us to offer fantastic family sailing as well as a great stable teaching platform as anyone who has been sailing in Hawks with us in previous years will know.

The boat is being prepared for the water by cleaning fitting new sails, mast, and engine and repairing / replacing any damaged or broken bits, its former life was on the Menai Starits so there were a few barnacles to remove too.

...and eventuallly the mast went up

Hopefully launched next week following work on the mooring, by a diver not Johan with a snorkel!

It really tickled us because we often joke about how sat nav is resposible for so many problems with meeting our groups, hence we send directions. The council now have signs telling you when to not follow it! anyway if you drive past this you've missed the entrance see below. Hope its helpful - our entrance.

Canoeing the length of Lake Windermere

7th December 2010 - Canoeing the Length of Lake Windermere with the Outdoor Instructor Training Course students.

I was lucky enough to get out the office to join a trip up the length of Windermere just 2 weeks ago in the snow - the views of the snowy mountain really were beautiful.

Laura and Yelmer Visit

Here are some pictures of when Laura, Johan's cousin, and her boyfriend Yelmer, came to do activities with RDMH on the week of the 16th August. Their multi-activity week included Mountain Biking, Gorge Walking and Abseiling, as well as some fun jumping in the river one evening.

Martin and sons, James and Thomas, thoroughly enjoyed our Abseiling Adventure Day this summer with Johan.

Martin said "Johan thanks for the abseiling adventure day. It was great to start with the views of Coniston from the climbing and then to finish with the 40 metre abseil.
We even learnt how useful a prusik can be! May come in handy one day."

My First RDMH Sailing Session

Sailing on Coniston Water on a wonderful summers day (but with plenty of wind) was such a great experience and different from anything I have done before!

My name's Amanda and I answer the phone, work on the website and do lots of other bits and bobs in the River Deep Mountain High office...and occassionally pop out to take part or help instruct the activities.

Johan, Matt, Seb and I headed out on a Hawk, one of the larger dinghy sailing boats (being 20 feet long!) last week on 23rd June and had a thoroughly enjoyable day! I loved been shown, instructed and eventually being let loose on controlling the boat myself!!

Being able to compare the activities that we provide with each other, as I take part in them myself (as a novice!), I found that sailing really offered a great alternative to the gorge walking, abseiling and archery. Dinghy sailing is essentially a relaxing activity that compliments an action packed holiday, the activity allows you time to take in a lot of information whilst taking a few risks in the strong winds with the boat really taking off, to the point where it seems impossible that you are mostly still dry!

I started off being given a very basic overview of the boat's components - mis-hearing Johan's 'Gib' explanation which meant we called it 'Jim' for the rest of the session! Jumping on the boat very quickly and heading out, practically learning how the boat was directed and controlled almost straight away. I learnt the different techniques for sailing upwind and downwind, understanding the sailing essentials! After a quick stop admiring the views and enjoying a yummy hot chocolate, (that Seb thoroughly enjoying pouring for us!!),

I had a little bit of theory explained to me using a whiteboard which meant I could use these new skills on the way back home.

I had done a taster session of Canoe-Sailing with colleague Beth when we first started last winter (wow, time has flown by!), and I had flashbacks of this particular session, whilst I was taking part in the Sailing. This made me really experience the benefit of transferable skills, such as moving the sail in the right direction to turn the boat whilst taking into account lots of other elements like making sure the balance in the boats was in the right direction! With so much to concentrate on (and laugh about if you make a little mistake!) time really does fly by and before we knew it, we were back on dry land. Again, with an easy steadying of the boat and jumping out, and watching the boat being safely taken back to the shore, we were done!

I can't wait for my next sailing experience!

Bobs Annual Walk - Sydneys 1st Hike - Blackcombe June 2010

Bobs Annual walk (Hike). Having walked Hellvelyn, Langdale Pikes, Coniston fells, Mosedale, and others in the central Lakes over the past 6 years. We went for the hill featured on BBC's Coast programme where the Lakes meets the sea, giving the opportunity to look into the lake district rather than being in the Lake district looking out.

The drive in is pretty awesome, to start with, this is Blackcombe in the Background

One of my favorite, walks, we only saw 3 other people all day proving its seclusion, we had woodland, valleys, rocks, dry, wet, sun, rain, mountain top, heather, bracken, bog cottton, sundew, bone dry peat and mosses. All in one day. Not bad eh, as I say "Beauty in Contrast".

Kayak surfing (staff night out) 17th June

Johan, Matt and James from 'River Deep Mountain High' enjoyed a bit of kayak surfing last night at Silecroft, Cumbria...

Awesome fun, not massive surf but really satisfying to paddle out through the waves and let them do the hard work to shoot you back to the shore!

The salty spray wasn’t quite as pleasant as the fresh water we’re used to when we run kayak sessions on Coniston water… just makes you appreciate what a nice environment we get to work in normally.

The salt spray brought back memories for myself, having spent the majority of this year so far on the sea... returning home only a couple of months ago having successfully rowed across the Atlantic with my Dad, a journey which took us a total of 82 days!

We jumped out of our kayaks on the beach for a quick coffee break as the sun set on the horizon, before heading back out to catch the last few sets of waves.

The tide had gone out while we were paddling though so it was a ‘pebble dash’ back to the car with the kayaks, beautifully demonstrated by Matt in the photo below!

Scafell Pike With Views ! Guided Walk 5th June

Fantastic Views for the first time from Scafell Pike for me, I think my 6th visit to the peak. I believe this is the usual case for visitors to the Peak, especially 3 peak walkers who often are there at night, and don't have time.

We walked from Langdale Old Dungeon Ghyll to the Summit and back setting off at 10:00 and returning at 5:00pm

This is a very long and demanding walk but very rewarding on a day such as this. The views and the way they open up over the crests are simply breathtaking.

If The Lake District is the most Beautiful place on the planet then these must be some of the best views and this one of the best walks on the planet.

I regularly say "Beauty is found in Contrast" and you have the contrast of cloud and no cloud, sea and mountains, clear sky and clouds forming, huge valleys as in langdale and Eskdale seen below and the highest peaks in England all visible as you stand on the top.

There you go I thought this needed sharing a great days walk and I was working! what a great job on days like today. Hope you are inspired.

New Premises and Watersports Base in Lake District

We have just moved premises to Lowick Old School. This enables us to offer more activities on our site such as Archery and Problem solving aswell as having meeting and conference space in the old School hall.

We also have a great new watersports base at the Waterhead Hotel Coniston, with changing and toilet facilities, from where we run Canoeing, Kayaking, Raftbuiling and Sailing.

The Water sports base has our RIB (Powered Safety Boat) on site now too, for safety on windier days and to enable fantastic canoe sailing journeys for business team building activity sessions. www.riverdeepmountainhigh.co.uk/activities.aspx/canoe_sailing

We ran a succesfull pilot Instructor Training Course over the winter 09/10 with 3 of 5 students able to find employment afterwards in either a trainee (apprenticeship) role or Seasonal Instructor, and the remaining 2 students one going back to teaching with new skills, and the other joining the Army.
